:: DO’s AND DON’Ts for TUTORIALS :: |
| . |
| Do's and Don't Do's | Workshops/Study Groups |
DO’s:
- Be prepared for the tutorial session by knowing the course to be tutored and the topics that may be covered.
ACF 90 or ACF 92: see Mrs. Fisher so you can be enrolled for Blackboard
ACF 94: go to www.bloomfield.edu/tutorial and click on the link “ACF 94 Website”
MTH 110: see Mrs. Fisher
ACF 88, MTH 113 and recitation: see Mr. Emmanuel Ankrah
English Conversational Workshops: see Ms. Haley, Ms. Alex DellaFera, or Ms. Gina Eloy.
- Come with all the necessary paperwork such as the tutor evaluation form, student evaluation form, and no show form.
- The forms you submit must be filled out completely and accurately.
- The forms must be submitted by the end of your work day.
- If you meet with a student for the first time and the student comes to the session without knowing the course title/number and/or instructor, then at the end of the session escort the student to the front desk to find out the information. If you meet with the same student and he/she still does not know the information, then inform the student to go get the information, and when he/she returns you will tutor them in the time remaining in the session.
- Proofread your reports for grammar and spelling errors. Remember that the tutorial evaluation you fill out will go to the student’s instructor. This will leave a good or bad impression about you, as well as CAD.
- When meeting with a student for the first time, introduce yourself and state that you are Peer Mentor Tutor. Also, briefly discuss your role as a tutor.
- Discuss with the student the topic that needs to be addressed during this tutorial session.
- Allow the student to “work out” the problems for themselves as much as you can.
- Use supplemental worksheets for additional examples to demonstrate problems to the students.
- Mentor the students in study skills such as notebook organization, note-taking methods, punctuality, and so forth. If needed, ask the student to make another appointment to cover study skills and not subject content.
DON’Ts:
- Do not come to a tutorial session without scrap paper, pen/pencil, and supplemental materials.
- Do not come to a tutorial session without the necessary paperwork to complete.
- Do not submit any paperwork that has not been completed or proofread.
- Do not complete all the problems presented by the student.
- Do not continue a session if the student refuses to take an active part in the session or becomes confrontational.
- Do not miss an opportunity to mentor the students so that he/she can become more independent learners.
- Do not gossip with the student.
- Do not leave Voorhees Hall if you do not have a tutorial session. Your hours are contract hours. You can use this time to review any materials for other tutorial sessions or workshops.
