Using Lecture 123 to Support Learning--Retention, Critical Thinking beyond the Classroom and Life-long Learning

Presenter: Marie K. Saimbert, Adjunct Pharmacology, Division of Nursing

Nursing is a profession at a crossroads attempting to deal with the challenges of today's healthcare climate and culture of future health professionals. More students that are non-traditional are answering the call for more nurses and they are juggling nursing studies with other life responsibilities. In addition, there are nursing students in accelerated BSN programs completing their course of study in 15 months. Students recognize the demands of the nursing curriculum are great and inquire about alternative teaching methods in light of their learning needs. It is a good time for nursing faculty and leaders to explore the use of relevant technologies to support nursing students' learning. In the technology armamentarium is Lecture 123, a product that supports asynchronous learning, as well as reinforces traditional face-to-face classroom instruction. Use of Lecture 123 with nursing students also allows them to gain more computer literacy. This prepares students for the automated healthcare environment where clinical information systems such as electronic medication administration records (eMARs), nursing documentation systems and electronic health records (EHRs) are becoming the norm.

At this presentation, you will explore an example pharmacology lecture using the Lecture 123 product. In addition, Lecture 123 pluses, including its fit with adjunct technologies such as iPods and the Tablet PC will be highlighted.
